With today’s technology, more people are working from home than ever before. An office environment can provide camaraderie and the occasional slice of birthday cake, but working remotely can offer flexible hours, an opportunity to hang out with your dog in your beautiful Signature home and, of course, time saved on your commute.
Whether you need a home office to run a business, telecommute, or simply a spot for paying bills and organizing your schedule, here are a few home office hacks that will help you create the ideal home office because you’ll be much more productive if you have a dedicated work area.
Consider the Location. You could be spending quite a bit of time here so make sure it suits your needs. Consider traffic flow, possible distractions, if you will have clients will be stopping by, and any other potential location issues.
Think Before Buying Furniture. You’ll want to invest in a good desk that works for you and your needs. Consider your workflow and what items you need at your fingertips quickly. Are you a stacker or filer? If you tend to make piles, get a nice basket to tame your mail, notes, and papers. If you prefer a clean desktop, designate one drawer for your “to-do” papers. Also, you’ll spend hours parked in your office chair so splurge on a beautiful, ergonomic, comfortable seat. Your back and neck will thank you.
Map Out Your Office Layout. When placing your furniture, think about the location of outlets and windows. Position the desk where you can stare at something more interesting than a blank wall when you glance up from the computer. Position the computer monitor so there’s no glare from a window or overhead light, and put a small lamp on the desk for task lighting.
Decorate From The Heart. This is your space, add the things you love and make it cozy. Paint the walls a color you adore. Add accessories that are your own style. Hang inspirational prints on the walls, whether that’s simply your kids’ framed artwork or a classic painting. Rock the Star Wars theme, go for the beach feel, add plush rugs and throws – whatever gets you in your groove and makes you happy and productive.
When you’ve created your personal haven of productivity, get down to work with these tips:
Set Working Hours. Keep your body clock in check by sticking to a normal workday schedule as much as possible and save all and any non-work-related activities for the evening or weekend. Shut down your computer and tidy up your workspace at the end of the day.
Dress For Success. Putting on slightly more formal attire than sweats increases confidence, and it can even boost abstract thinking.
Take a Time Out. Step away from the screen for some fresh air every couple of hours.
